Quarterly Goals

I had a meeting with my business coach last week to talk about my business in general and where I’d like to take it. Of course, I had a flip answer ‘To the Moon’ I replied. That drew the expected chuckle from her. She then said, ‘Really, what are your goals for this year – 2017’. I had no reply. I was deep in thought. I was thinking about all the areas that I want to improve regarding my business.. more speaking, sell more books, work with organizing clients, write my blog. I have an endless list. Being very smart, my coach then asked me to focus on just one topic and create a short term goal. Her question was what would I like to focus on this quarter?

I love this idea which is why I’m sharing it with you. Focusing on just a few things for just a few months makes the goal so much more achievable. Since the end is in sight I better create a plan and write down the steps I need to take, to make measurable progress by the end of March. I like this so much better than planning what I want to have accomplished by the end of December – 12 long months from now.

I encourage you to think about your goals in small chunks. Think about what you would like to accomplish between now and the end of March. Is there a house project? If there is, is it something would contract out or is it a project you want to tackle yourself?

Do you have a personal goal to exercise more? Now is the time to sign up for that gym membership! Or maybe you want to create your own exercise routine. Perhaps you’ll mix it up and create a schedule to walk so many times a week combined with an exercise class or two.

Do you want to cook at home more often? There are many different companies which offer pre-measured ingredients packaged meal by meal and are delivered to your home. You can check them out online.

A great short term goal might be to get control of your papers and filing system. Think about it. If you worked on that a little at a time between now and the end of February. You would accomplish two things. You’d have a paper filing system that is current and you would be able to tackle your taxes in March, enabling you to get them off your desk promptly.

Wow! Aren’t you just loving the thought of these short-term or quarterly goals?

New Habits for a New Year

Did you identify a habit to change? Perhaps you just want to shake up your routine. Take your time and change your habit little by little. If you’ve decided to lose a few pounds then why not start by reducing the size of your portions? You can even trick yourself by using a smaller plate. That way the portions look right for the size of the plate!

If you decided to work out more often why not start by taking a short walk every day and then gradually increasing the distance you walk and the pace you set. There’s a great app for that. Check out RunKeeper. I use it every morning when I walk my dogs. I like to see how far we’ve traveled (usually not that far as I have limited time), what pace we kept (we walk slowly as my dog, Miles, likes to sniff a lot), and how many calories I’ve burned in the process.

If you want to get more sleep try going to bed five or ten minutes earlier each night until you arrive at the bedtime that works for you.

Be consistent in your efforts and forgive yourself if you goof one day. Remember your reason for creating a new habit and make a plan to start implementing it. You may want to post some reminders around the house or set reminders in your phone to help you.

I know it will be hard for me to resist doing a few errands if I don’t have a client scheduled on a Monday morning and if I have errands to do. However, it has become increasingly evident to me that I really need to dedicate this time to business housekeeping. Knowing that makes me WANT to create this new habit.

Be sure about the habit you are choosing to create. Since you know that changing a habit is a challenge it’s not enough to need to change the habit. You also have to WANT to make this change. Once you have the desire to change, make a plan to take small incremental steps toward this new habit. Small steps are the key to lasting change.

 

Resolutions

Do you make a New Year’s Resolution? I used to. It generally involved promising myself to exercise more and eat healthier meals – snack less.

I just read a post on Facebook from a life coach about her top 10 New Year’s resolutions. I loved reading them because they were all about doing small things for yourself. They were something like: rest more, let myself off the hook, schedule fun everyday…. these are wonderful to remember and not to hard to keep.

The resolutions that I used to make – promises to myself – were never kept. Well, maybe they were for about a month and then I forgot all about them. This New Year’s Eve I suggest that we follow this life coach’s example and write down a few (not more than 10) things that are easy to complete almost daily or at least weekly. Then post these resolutions somewhere you’ll see them daily. This way they will stay in your mind and hopefully on your calendar. Remember if you don’t schedule the time for yourself it probably won’t happen.

Another activity to engage in over the next few days is to write down your accomplishments from 2014. What are the projects that you completed – write them down. Did you take any trips, go to any conferences, have any adventures? Write them down and celebrate these marvelous accomplishments. I think it’s awesome to plan your next goals but I also think it’s great to remember and celebrate that which has already been tackled and successfully completed!

Here’s to remembering what was in 2014 and looking forward to what will be in 2015!

Let’s Juggle

Do you juggle all sorts of activities? Another way to ask this is how many roles do you play in life? Are you a spouse, a parent, a co-worker at the office? Do you run your own business? Perhaps you are also a golfer, a tennis player, the coach for your child’s soccer team or t-ball team. Additionally maybe you participate in a book club or a bible study group. Do you also exercise at a gym?

We juggle all sorts of things in a day. The trick is to be a good juggler or maybe really good at prioritizing. Here are some tips to keep you on track with all the activities you juggle.
1. Make a list of all the different activities you juggle
2. Think about what you want to accomplish in each different activity this week
3. Make a separate list of things to do for each different activity
4. Prioritize the lists
5. Schedule time in your calendar to do at least one thing to move each activity forward – or to keep it current

When you know what you want to take care of for each of the different aspects of your life and you dedicate at least a little time to each aspect or activity you will be in better control. You will be like the expert juggler who is able to keep multiple balls in the air at once.

Daily Habits

I have a several things (chores, actually) that I do everyday. I have done them so often now that taking care of these chores is a habit for me. You can call it a daily habit. Do you have tasks or chores that you’d like to be sure to do everyday? Take a look at the tasks you really want to accomplish on a daily basis. Maybe something like walking your dog or cleaning out the kitty litter? Walking the dog every morning accomplishes two things it gives you and your dog exercise. Cleaning out the kitty litter on a daily basis helps to combat the odor and eliminates the need for you to completely empty and refill the litter box as frequently. When you take care of the laundry frequently it doesn’t pile up and become a monumental or overwhelming task. Even just sorting the laundry regularly helps. You can see from the volume of clothes if you had better set aside some time to do a whites load or a colors load.

Once you decide which chores you want to do daily start by scheduling one task into your day everyday. When that becomes a routine for you – after a week or two – try adding another chore. Continue this process until you have created the habit of doing the tasks you want to do regularly. I’m not suggesting that you create a lengthy list. On the contrary, your list of things to do daily should only take about 30 – 45 minutes to complete (unless laundry is a task…that takes about 90 minutes total).

My daily habits include walking my dog, watering my plants (I grow orchids and check them daily), tidying the bathroom, and laundry. Write me back and let me know what chores you are going to turn into habits.

Clutter-Free Gifts

Did you go shopping this past weekend? Maybe you were one of those who shopped after their Thanksgiving Dinner? I didn’t shop on Thanksgiving Day but I did shop at some of the small businesses in my community on Small Business Saturday. Did you? I will admit that I’m a great cyber shopper and in fact was one of those shopping on Cyber Monday. Interesting don’t you think that these shopping days have been named…

There was a terrific chalkboard saying posted on Pinterest last week regarding purchasing gifts for children. It went something like this: 1 thing they need, 1 thing to wear, 1 thing they want, 1 thing they read. I love this and hope you do too!You do not need to purchase an abundance of things. Too many things just adds to the collection. As a professional organizer, I’m always repeating this mantra to my clients: 1 thing goes out before 1 thing comes in. This is a wonderful time of year to help your children organize their toys and books. If there are toys that are in good condition but that your children no longer play with donate them to a local charity or Goodwill. Books in good condition can be donated to a childcare facility, your local library, or even your school. This way you make room for some things to come in and teach your children that they do not have to hang on to things they are no longer using. A valuable life lesson!

We usually take a family vacation over the holidays and the vacation itself makes up a large portion of my gift to my children. I am a big believer in clutter-free gift giving. These gifts usually involve an experience and they don’t take up any space! You don’t have to put them away.  There are many ways to give a clutter-free gift All you have to do is know the person to whom you are giving and then use your imagination. Here are some questions to get your creative juices flowing. What do they like to do? What are their favorite foods? Do they have a hobby?

Here are a few concrete suggestions:

1. Tickets to a show, the movies, or a local attraction – like the aquarium

2. Something baked: cookies, a cake, or even a casserole

3. Gift certificate to a restaurant (if the person has children you could include babysitting!)

4. Gift certificate for a spa service: facial, manicure/pedicure

5. Gift certificate for a lesson: tennis, golf, skiing, snowboarding, ballroom dance

6. Hire a Professional Organizer for a few hours to help a friend or family member get organized in 1 area of their home

The best part of giving a clutter-free gift is that you are not just giving a thing to use you are also giving an experience! It’s two gifts rolled into one – Isn’t that wonderful!

Do not procrastinate!

Earlier in 2011 I made myself a promise to make and keep appointments with the variety of doctors that I see.  I did just that and had seen everyone I was scheduled to see by the end of August. However, the doctor I saw in August strongly suggested that I make an appointment for a colonoscopy. I was reluctant but this was something I had been putting off – procrastinating about – for several years. I went ahead and scheduled first the visit to meet the doctor and then the colonoscopy. I thought  what’s to worry about? I exercise regularly, I am at a normal weight, I eat healthily – lots of fruits and vegetables. I’ll be fine, I told myself. I had the colonsocopy and the doctor found a polyp which he could remove then and there – good! – but he also found a very large growth, a tumor, which had to be surgically removed. This involved removing a section of my colon. Scary thoughts now entered my mind.

I am very lucky. I had the surgery 2 weeks ago. The fact that I exercise regularly and that I am in otherwise good health has helped speed my recovery along. The polyp that was removed and the tumor were benign. Hindsight, by its very nature, is perfect. In hindsight I wish I had listened to my doctor five years ago when he first started strongly recommending a colonoscopy. Maybe if I had not procrastinated I could have avoided this surgery. I will never know and wondering about it does not do any good.

If you are someone who has been putting off this test thinking to yourself I am healthy, have no problems and do not want to do this please think again. Listen to your doctor and have this test.
